Listen to the story
Agripina is Cologne, and the map spells it with a single p, the same slip found in a list of places compiled in Ravenna. The city took its name from Agrippina the Younger, who was born here and persuaded her husband, the emperor Claudius, to make it a colony of veterans in AD 50. Its later everyday name, simply Colonia, lives on in Cologne. The Tabula marks it with a pair of towers, the plainest city sign, at a junction of five roads. The short form Agrippina appears only from the late third century, a hint that this entry dates from late antiquity.
