Agen
Listen to the story
Aginnum was the town of the Nitiobriges, a Gallic people settled on the Garonne in the Roman province of Aquitania, and it lives on as Agen in France. The name is old, probably in use by the time of Augustus, and the town grew into a crossroads where three roads met, among them the routes to Bordeaux and to Lectoure. A milestone found nearby still names the community of the Nitiobriges. The name outlasted Rome: Merovingian and Carolingian coins carry it, and so do coins struck there for the English king Edward the Third. On the map, the copyist set the thirteen miles to the next station tight against the name, although the road line had room for them.
