Adrimitios

Ören Tepe, früher Kap KarataşKaratasch (Miller)

Listen to the story

Adrimitios, the ancient harbour city of Adramyttium, is barely legible on the map: its name, split in two by a river line, has faded almost entirely, and only the final syllable is still clear, while older copies give the full form. The ruins lie at Ören Tepe in Turkey, and the name lives on in nearby Edremit, the successor town founded in 1093 as the harbour silted up. The philosopher Aristotle credited its founding to Adramys, a brother of King Croesus, who himself governed the city before he took the throne. The apostle Paul later set sail on one of its ships.
