Ad Protorium

Listen to the story
Ad Protorium is a copyist's slip: the form occurs nowhere else and was clearly miswritten from Ad Praetorium, 'at the praetorium', an official lodging on the road. A Roman register of routes calls it the praetorium of the Latobici, a Celtic people in Pannonia Superior, and the geographer Ptolemy also knew it. The site lies at Pristava near Trebnje in Slovenia. Before AD 158 it became a post for beneficiarii, soldiers seconded from the governor's staff. Their inscriptions run until 275 and include dedications to Jupiter Best and Greatest, and soldiers of three legions left their names. A milestone and buildings with mosaics have been found.
