Listen to the story
Actia Nicopolis, the victory city by Actium, was founded by Octavian in 30 BC on the hill where his tent had stood during his battle against Antony and Cleopatra. Its ruins lie at Palaio-Preveza in western Greece. The people of whole towns in the region were resettled here, creating a city of perhaps eighty to a hundred thousand inhabitants. The map adds an unusual line along the road: from Actia Nicopolis to Larissa, seventy miles. The real distance is nearly a hundred and fifteen, so a station or part of the number was probably lost.
