Ab Actia Nicopori Larissa vsque (usque) milia passuum LXX

Palaio-Preveza

Listen to the story

Ab Actia Nicopori Larissa usque milia passuum LXX is not a town at all but a note written onto the road, meaning 'from Actia Nicopolis all the way to Larissa, seventy miles'. It repeats the station of Actia Nicopolis, whose remains lie at Palaio-Preveza in Greece. The figure does not fit: seventy Roman miles only reach Tricca, today Trikala, and Larissa lies another thirty-six to forty miles beyond. Perhaps the copyist wrote seventy for a hundred and twenty, or a stage to Tricca simply dropped out.
