Ab Hierapoli (ad) Zeu(g)ma milia passuum XXIIII
Membidj
Ab Hierapoli ad Zeugma milia passuum is not a place label but a written road note: from Hierapolis to Zeugma, twenty-four Roman miles, about thirty-five and a half kilometres. Hierapolis, Greek for 'holy city', is Membidj in Syria, and Zeugma was the crossing of the Euphrates. The note stands in black lettering with no picture, and the copyist dropped the g from Zeugma.
