Ad Matricem
Otinovci
Listen to the story
Ad Matricem, a name found nowhere else, probably marked the centre of Roman mining at the foot of the Vranica mountains, where the hills held gold, silver and other ores. The word matrix here refers to the register of tenant workers who laboured in the mines. The Tabula gives it a striking picture: domed towers joined by a battlemented wall. Scholars are divided over whether this honours a town grown rich on its mines or is simply the copyist's fantasy. The site is mostly placed at Otinovci near Kupres in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where an early Christian basilica and decorated graves have come to light.
