Ad tygrem
Diyarbakır
Listen to the story
Ad Tygrem means 'at the Tigris', and the road really does cross the river, twice on the stretch towards Sardebar. The place is usually identified with Amida, now Diyarbakır in Turkey, though older research placed it at ruins beside a Tigris crossing near Kösele. The map gives only a name with no picture, even though the junction seems important enough to deserve a symbol. Amida itself was turned from a small town into a strong fortress by the emperor Constantius, and the Roman historian Ammianus Marcellinus lived through its siege by the Persian king Shapur in AD 359.
