Aecas
Troia
Listen to the story
Aecas, a town of Apulia on the Via Traiana between Benevento and Bari, is today Troia in southern Italy. The Greek historian Polybius already knew it, and during the Second Punic War it sided with Hannibal for a time, until Rome won it back in 214 BC, as the Roman historian Livy reports. Under Septimius Severus it seems to have been a Roman colony bearing the honorific Augusta. On the map the town sits in the wrong order: a Roman register of routes and a pilgrim's route from Bordeaux both place it after Ordona, but the copyist muddled this whole stretch of road.
