Aenos
Enez
Listen to the story
Aenos, now Enez in Turkey, had a reputation for its weather: the writer Athenaeus joked that it was cold there for eight months and winter for the remaining four. The city stood on a peninsula in a lagoon at the mouth of the river Hebros. The map does not show the peninsula and sets the city too far east of the river mouth, perhaps shifted during copying. Virgil and other Roman writers credited Aeneas with founding it, but it was an Aeolian Greek colony with settlers from Mytilene and Kyme. In 185 BC the Attalid kings bequeathed it to Rome.
