Novesio

Neuss

Novesio is Novaesium, today Neuss in Germany, where the Erft meets the Rhine. From around 16 BC the Romans kept a major military base here, and from the thirties of the first century a legion was stationed permanently. In the Batavian revolt of 69 the camp was taken, and its Sixteenth Legion had to march out in disgrace to Trier; Vespasian later dissolved the legion altogether. The Sixth Legion rebuilt the camp. Much later the Alamanni destroyed Novaesium, and the emperor Julian had it rebuilt.
