Noreia
Neumarkt-Einöd · Wilbad Einöd
Listen to the story
Noreia, the first of two on this road, is placed at Wildbad Einöd near Neumarkt in Styria, where remains of a settlement with storehouses and smithies have been found. Its name recalls the old Noreia, capital of the Taurisci, where the Cimbri defeated a Roman army in 113 BC and which the Boii besieged, as Caesar tells; the Roman writer Pliny says it was no longer inhabited in his day. Noreia was also the name of a mother goddess honoured in inscriptions, and probably the whole of Noricum was named after it.
