Listen to the story
Novioduni is Neviodunum, today Drnovo near Krško in Slovenia, a Celtic settlement of the Latobici that grew into a Roman town on the road from Emona to Siscia. Nearby the road crossed the Sava, and a branch led off to Celeia. Under the Flavian emperors it became a self-governing town, supplied by an aqueduct; its people worshipped Jupiter, Neptune and the heavenly goddess Caelestis, and a Mithras sanctuary and a late Roman fort lie close by. The name is Celtic for new fort, and other places bear it too.
