Noreia

Listen to the story

Noreia appears twice in a row on this road, the second thirteen Roman miles after the first, and this repetition is almost certainly a mistake. Because the doubled stretch fits smoothly into the layout, it may be the mapmaker's own slip rather than a later copyist's; around here as many as seven names carry the figures thirteen or fourteen, which may have caused the confusion. Older research simply struck the second Noreia out, since there is no room for another station here. The name belonged to a mother goddess and to the old capital of the Taurisci.
