Nola
Listen to the story
Nola, which still bears its name, was one of the oldest towns of Campania. Here in 215 BC Hannibal suffered his first real setback in Italy, when Marcellus beat off his attack on the town, and here, on the nineteenth of August in 14 AD, the emperor Augustus died. Nola's graves have yielded many fine Greek vases, and a medieval tradition even claimed that church bells were invented here, which is why they came to be called campanae.
