Suessula

Cancello (Miller)

Listen to the story

Suessula lay in the low plain near Acerra, halfway between Capua and Nola. Here in 343 BC the Romans won a decisive victory over the Samnites, and forty thousand enemy shields were said to have been gathered from the field. In the war against Hannibal, Marcellus fortified a camp in the hills above Suessula to keep watch over Campania. Sulla later settled a colony here. On the map the road on to Neapolis through Acerrae is missing.
