Road station
Subradice
Hristo Danovo
Subradice, below the roots, lay at the foot of the Haemus near today's Hristo Danovo, guarding the road from Philippopolis over the mountains to Oescus on the Danube; the map sets it between two mountain chains. On a low spur in a bend of the river Kodža stand fort walls up to 6 metres high. The first building, from the mid 2nd century, was an inn or a small fort; later came barracks of the First Aurelian Cohort, which still held the post around 400, with a commander's house, baths and an early Christian basilica. Between it and Philippopolis one or two stations seem to be missing.
