Sublacio

Subiaco

Listen to the story

Sublacio recalls Sublaqueum, below the lakes, the ancient name of Subiaco in the upper Anio valley, where Nero dammed the river into three lakes for his villa; centuries later Saint Benedict withdrew here as a hermit and founded his first monasteries. Yet the station on this road may be another place of that name, near the great tunnel Claudius cut to drain the Fucine lake. The map adds to the puzzle: the road simply stops here, with no onward stretch.
