Road station

Stenas

wohl NO-Ende des Tempetales

Stenas is written below the road line, because there was no room above it before the coastline, and its station mark points up instead of down. The name, the narrows, means the Vale of Tempe in Thessaly, the gorge of the Peneus between Olympus and Ossa, in places only forty-five metres wide, which, as the Greek historian Polybius claimed, ten men could hold. Deep wheel ruts survive from the road that Caesar fortified through the gorge in 48 BC, and an inscription of the legate Cassius Longinus marks its narrowest point.
