Stenas

Gradec · Gradets? oder eher bei Demir-Kapija ?

Stenas lay at the gorge of the Vardar called Demir Kapija, the Iron Gate, in North Macedonia, where, as an ancient geographer put it, the river makes Macedonia hard to enter from Paeonia. Near the village a fortified town with graves of the second to fourth centuries and cemetery churches has been found. The name comes from the Greek for the narrows, and the map has a second place so called. The map's twelve miles, about eighteen kilometres, on to Idomenia are too few: the real distance is some thirty-three kilometres, perhaps because an X dropped out of the figure.
