Road station

Sublanubio

bei Lanuvio [4] · nördl. v. Montecagnoletto [Pleiades]

Listen to the story

Sublanubio means 'below Lanuvium', and that is exactly where this road station stood: on the Via Appia at the foot of the hill that carried the old town of Lanuvium, a little way off the road itself. The site lies near modern Lanuvio in Italy, around the twentieth milestone from Rome, though its precise spot is unknown. For such a modest stop, the map is generous, giving it a small drawing of a hall, probably marking a staging post where travellers could halt. The distance figures to its neighbours, Aricia and Tres Tabernae, have both dropped out.
