Sulmonae
Sulmona
Listen to the story
Sulmona, the Roman Sulmo, a town of the Paeligni ringed by cold mountain streams, was the birthplace of the poet Ovid, who from exile fondly recalled his home rich in icy waters. Sulla destroyed it in the civil wars, but it rose again as a colony, and on the slopes of Monte Morrone above it lay a sanctuary of Hercules Curinus. The map writes the name as Sulmonae, ending in a joined ae, a form otherwise found only in the list of places compiled in Ravenna.
