Sutrio

Sutri

Listen to the story

Sutrio is Sutrium, now Sutri, on a spur of tuff between two ranges of hills, a stronghold that guarded the road from Rome into Etruria. The historian Livy tells how the Etruscans captured it and Camillus won it back on the very same day. Below the town lies an amphitheatre carved straight out of the soft rock, and nearby the church of the Madonna del Parto may once have been a shrine of Mithras, the god of a mystery cult.
