Syda Municipium

Djemaa Saharidj

Syda Municipium is a misreading of Bida, a Roman town at Djemaa Saharidj in the Kabylie mountains of Algeria, on the inland road from Saldae, today Béjaïa, to Rusuccuru. A Roman register of routes calls it the municipium of Bida, the Greek geographer Ptolemy a colony, and an inscription names the officer in charge of the frontier district of Bida. A bishop is recorded in 484. The map sets it thirty-two Roman miles, about forty-seven kilometres, from Tigisi, a figure that older research thought belonged to the stage from Rusuccuru.
