Tabernis

Saverne-Usspann

On the map the road from Tabernis to Strasbourg carries no figure; the Roman register of routes gives fourteen. Tabernis, the inns, later Tres Tabernae, is Saverne, at the foot of the pass that was the gateway from the Rhine plain into inner Gaul, and it grew from a road station into a sizeable village. Many of its tombstones are shaped like little houses, a sign of a Celtic population pushed back from the plain. Walled with round towers in the late third or early fourth century, it served Julian as a base before his victory near Strasbourg, as the Roman historian Ammianus relates.
