Tabernis
Rheinzabern
Tabernis lies at Rheinzabern in the Palatinate in Germany, which still carries the ancient name. In the first century the legions of the Upper Rhine fired their roof tiles here, and around 120 potters from Alsace founded an industry of red-gloss tableware that soon outstripped its rivals, selling far across the Rhine. When the frontier beyond the river was lost, the potters moved away, and soldiers of the frontier army, among them a unit of Menapii, made tiles here instead. A hoard of bronze vessels was hidden during the Germanic raids of the third century. The Latin name means At the Inns.
