Tarnaias
Massongex (Barrington) · St. Maurice (Miller)
Tarnaias was a place of the Nantuates in the Rhône valley, at Saint-Maurice or at nearby Massongex in the Swiss Valais. The four communities of the Valais set up a monument here to the younger Drusus, and in the third century there was a customs post for the Gallic duty and a post of soldiers from the Twenty-second Legion. Its second name, Acaunum, was already in use in Roman times. By the end of the fourth century a church stood here, bound up with the legend of the martyred Theban Legion, and Burgundian kings later founded the famous abbey of Saint-Maurice.
