Syrascelle
Malkara?
Syrascelle, probably at today's Malkara, lay between the Hebros and the Sea of Marmara on the road from Aenos by Cypsela to Perinthus and Byzantium. Its Thracian name may contain a word for strong or mighty; the Bordeaux pilgrim wrote it Sirogellis. Ruins nearby have yielded a Roman relief and a fragment of a gravestone showing gladiators fighting lions, now in the Istanbul Archaeological Museum, and a burial mound has been excavated. The boundary between the provinces of Europa and Rhodope ran close by.
