Surrento

Sorrento

Listen to the story

Svrrento is Surrentum, now Sorrento, on the peninsula facing Capri, a Greek foundation that later came under Oscan rule. On the cape beyond it stood a sanctuary of Athena, and the Sirens of the Odyssey were worshipped nearby. Its hills produced a highly prized wine, its potters made the jars to hold it, and from the first century BC wealthy Romans built splendid villas on its cliffs. On the map both its distances are missing.
