Ad Novas
S. Maria a Vico
Listen to the story
An inscription found here names a priest of the Great Mother, the Anatolian goddess Cybele, who served in the vicus Novanensis, the village of the new inns, at Santa Maria a Vico near Arienzo. The station, Ad Novas, stood where the Via Appia turned from Calatia into the funnel-shaped valley leading up to the Caudine pass, and the pilgrim from Bordeaux changed horses here too. Milestones found further up the valley count fourteen and sixteen miles from Capua.
