Listen to the story
Ad Oculum Marinum, at the eye of the sea, was a station in Algeria on the road past the great salt lake of Chott el Hodna. Its site is lost: older research placed it near Guelalia on the south-eastern shore of the lake, a modern atlas simply about thirty-four Roman miles west of Zarai. The map sets it twenty-five Roman miles from Vaccae; the lines beyond it are confused, and a figure of forty nearby probably belongs to the link with Ad Capsum Iuliani.
