Ad Pactas

Listen to the story
Ad Pactas is a slip for Ad Pictas, at the painted inns: the Greek geographer Strabo describes a group of brightly painted taverns here, near Le Macere, where a link road joined the Via Latina and the Via Labicana. In 88 BC, as Sulla marched on Rome from Nola, envoys from the Senate met him at these inns, the first time a Roman general led his legions against the city itself. A Roman register of routes also lists the place, correctly, as Ad Pictas.
