Mons Tifata

Monte Tifata

Listen to the story

Above Capua, in the hills near Caserta, rises Mons Tifata, and the map frames it with two sanctuaries: a temple of Jupiter of Tifata on one side and the shrine of Diana on the other. Its three humps sit just above the twin towers of Capua. The name was said to mean oak woods, and the dense forest gave cover to robber bands and to Hannibal, who operated from here for a long time; in 83 BC Sulla won a battle here.
