Mons Taurus

Toros Dağları (Barrington)

Listen to the story

The Taurus Mountains of southern Turkey, the Mons Taurus of the map, do not end there: the map draws them as one immense range that runs right across Asia to China and cuts the continent in half, just as the Greek geographer Eratosthenes had pictured it. Later geographers, Ptolemy among them, kept the single chain but gave its eastern half names of its own, such as Caucasus and Imaus, and on the map too the range ends as Mons Imeus.
