Mons Parverdes

Listen to the story

The mountains that line Turkey's Black Sea coast towards Georgia, with peaks of nearly four thousand metres, are the Mons Parverdes of the map, the Paryadres of ancient geographers. On the map the Euphrates rises here. Towards the sea the range falls to a narrow coastal plain, cut by the valleys of rivers breaking through, and on the other side it drops to the Anatolian plateau along a line of frequent earthquakes.
