Mountain
Mons N.N.
Listen to the story
The heel of Italy has only low limestone hills, yet the map draws five mountain humps here above Tarentum, now Taranto, with two rivers flowing from them: the Pastium, which reaches the sea at Brundisium, and a nameless one that ends south of Lupiae, now Lecce. The Greek geographer Strabo does call this country mountainous, and on that basis the humps are best read as the low hills of the Murge near Taranto.
