Mountain
Mons N.N.
Monti Ernici [1]
Listen to the story
Six small humps just below the Apennines, beside the road station of Sublacio, now Subiaco, are the map's picture of the Monti Ernici, the mountains of the Hernici. That people's name was said to come from herna, a word for rock in the language of the Sabines and the Marsi, a fitting name for a hill folk. The Hernici became allies of Rome in 486 BC, and their chief town was Anagnia, now Anagni.
