Mons Lymodus

Altun Shan-Kunlun range

Listen to the story

Drawn with its jaws wide open, the mountain symbol of Mons Lymodus has a remarkable shape, and a world map illustrating a commentary by Beatus shows the same picture. The name answers to Emodus, which ancient geographers gave, together with Imaus, to the vast ranges of the far east; for Ptolemy they formed the border between India and the land of the Seres. Both names reached Greek books through Megasthenes, an envoy of the Seleucid kings at an Indian court, and at first they meant the Himalaya. Today the range is matched with the Kunlun and the Altun Shan.
