Mons Massicus

Monte Massico [4] · Monti di Roccamonfina [1]

Listen to the story

Mons Massicus was famous for its wine, praised by Roman poets from Virgil to Martial and grown on slopes dotted with villas. On the map three humps, coloured yellow, sit below the twin towers of Teanum and send a short river, the Savo, to the sea at Sinuessa. That river really rises at Roccamonfina, an old volcano much like Vesuvius in shape, so the humps may stand for that group rather than for Monte Massico itself.
