Mountain
Mons Lactarius
Monti Lattari
Listen to the story
Sick Romans were sent to Mons Lactarius, the milk mountain above Stabiae, to drink the milk of its cows, which the physician Galen praised for its healing power, thanks to the herbs they grazed. The map draws the Monti Lattari as three humps below the twin towers of Nuceria, at the start of the Sorrento peninsula, and puts them in the right place. In AD 553 the general Narses defeated the Ostrogoths here, and their king Teias fell in these mountains.
