Mons Ciminus

Monti Cimini [1]

Listen to the story

A forest so dense that the Roman historian Livy found it more frightening than the forests of Germany once covered Mons Ciminus, the Monti Cimini near Viterbo; no Roman army crossed it until the consul Fabius Maximus in 310 BC, though Livy surely exaggerates. The map draws the range as nine rounded humps from which the Marta flows, and a little further on it writes lake and mountain Ciminus once more, because it stretches Italy so far lengthwise that neighbouring places drift apart.
