Road station

Ad Teglanum

Listen to the story

Ad Teglanum was a road station on the road between Nola and Nuceria, on land that today belongs to Palma Campania. The name makes no sense in Latin as it stands, and is probably a slip for ad tegularium, meaning at the tile works, because the letters n and ri look almost identical in Roman cursive script. The map gives the station a small drawing of a farmstead-like building. It most likely marks a mansio, an overnight stop for travellers, standing beside a tile works or even belonging to one. Curiously, the drawing appears here, while the neighbouring town of Nola has none.
