Ad Stoma

Sfînu Gheorghe

Ad Stoma, at the mouth, stood at the southernmost arm of the Danube, where Sfântu Gheorghe lies today; it is the Sacred Mouth of the river named in the Greek writer Arrian's description of the Black Sea coast. The map gives twenty-four miles from Salsovia and a long sixty on to Histria; Arrian reckons five hundred stadia from the Sacred Mouth to Istria. Two milestones of 159 and 162 found at Kasapkioi count nineteen miles. Some older copies misread the name as stonia.
