Ad Solaria

Calenzano [2] · near Capalle (Barrington)

Listen to the story

Cremation urns shaped like eggs, some covered with roof tiles, have been found in a cemetery at Calenzano near Florence, close to where Ad Solaria stood on the road to Pistoia and Lucca. The name probably refers to a sunny terrace, or to a sundial, and a station of the same name appears on the Ligurian coast. From here a road ran north through the Apennines towards Bologna, close to the line of the modern motorway.
