Road station
Noviomagus
Speyer · Spire
On the map Noviomagus is a plain station name on the road along the Rhine between Worms and Rheinzabern; it is Speyer in Germany. A Roman military post was set up here around 9 BC, and in Flavian times the civilian settlement grew into a Roman town with a forum and an amphitheatre, the chief place of the Nemetes, whose name it later took. Distances on the Rhine road were counted from here. The Germanic invasion of 275 did terrible damage, and the town was hit again in 352. Its Celtic name means New Field, which is why other places on the map share it.
