Numana

Listen to the story

Numana, which still bears its name, lies on the southern slope of Monte Conero below Ancona, with a harbour sheltered from the north wind. The Roman writer Pliny says Sicels founded it, and its rich graves, among them the tomb known as the Princess's, show an early wealth; in the fourth century BC Greek traders set up a market here. Under Rome the little port lost its importance.
