Epifania

Gözene · Gözeneler Harabesi

The ruins of Epifania lie near Erzin in the Cilician plain, with a well-preserved theatre and aqueduct and two early Byzantine churches, one built over a pagan building. Its older name was Oiniandos, Winuwanda in Late Bronze Age texts, and the new name probably honoured King Antiochus Epiphanes. Cicero reports that his cavalry, together with a cohort stationed here as a garrison, cut down Parthian horsemen who had crossed into Cilicia. Pompey settled pirates in the town, and it was the birthplace of George, bishop of Alexandria, who was murdered in 361 when Julian became emperor.
