Epomanduo

Mandeure

Epomanduo is Mandeure on the Doubs, the Epamanduodurum of the Sequani; the map gives only the first part of the long Celtic name and leaves off its ending, durum, the fort. Ruins of a great amphitheatre and many other antiquities mark the site. A milestone found there counts forty-eight miles from Besançon, and the list of places compiled in Ravenna garbles the name as Mandroda. The Roman register of routes knows two forms, Epamantuduro and Epamanduoduro.
