Listen to the story

Ereto is Eretum, a Sabine village above the Tiber where, as the Greek geographer Strabo notes, the Via Nomentana joined the Via Salaria, some eighteen Roman miles, about twenty-seven kilometres, from Rome. In the legends of early Rome it was a frontier town fought over again and again; later it was just a road station, and ancient writers even derived its name from the goddess Hera. On the map the road from Nomentum is only hinted at by a little hook that ends in nothing.
